Contents of the Vedas There are four distinctive parts of the Vedas, which are arranged chronologically. Let us refer below to know those parts or compositions: The Samhitas These are the oldest known part of the Vedas, which are primarily constituted of hymns and prayers in praise of God. The Brahmanas The Brahmanas are mainly a handbook of rituals and prayers so to guide the priests in their rituals. The Aranyakas This part is essentially concerned with worship and meditation. The Upanishads The Upanishads contain the mystical and philosophical teachings of Hinduism. Types of Vedas. The Samhita part of the Vedas can be divided into four distinct types, namely: Rigveda This is the oldest form of Veda. Rigveda consists of 1028 hymns, which are also called ‘suktas’ and is a collection of 10 books called ‘Mandalas’. The Rigveda was said to write between 1800-1100 BCE and is the oldest scripture of Vedic Sanskrit text. “Rigveda” literally translates to “Praise Knowledge”. It consists of around 10600verses. Mandala 1 and 10 are the youngest books of the Rigveda as they were scripted after books 2 and 9. Rigvedic books 2-7 are the oldest and shortest ones and sometimes termed as “family book”. The hymns of the Rigveda deal with deities including Agni, Indra and are attributed to a sage rishi. Gayatri, Anushtubh, Trishtubh and Jagati are the meters used to form the hymns of Rigveda. Samaveda The Samaveda traces its roots to way back in 1200-800 BCE. This Veda is essentially concerned with public worship. Samaveda has a total of 1549 verses out of which 75 of them have been taken from the Rigveda. Kena Upanishad and Chandogya Upanishad are attached to the Samaveda. It is considered to be the root of Indian classical music and dance, as it is considered to be a depository of melodious hymns and chants. The Samaveda has three distinct recensions- Kauthuma, Ranayaniya and Jaimaniya. Samaveda is not necessarily meant to be read; it is more of a musical score that needs to hear. Yajurveda Yajurveda was scripted almost in the similar timeline of the Samaveda, that is 1100 to 800 BCE. It is a storehouse of rituals, mantras, and chants for the Almighty and wisdom. Yajurveda means “Worship of Knowledge”. There are two types of Yajurveda- the Krishna (Black/Dark) and the Shukla (White/Bright). Krishna Yajurveda pertains to a more obfuscated and obscure motley collection of verses, as opposed to Shukla Yajurveda, where verses are clear and arranged. The oldest version of this Veda has 1875 verses, mostly adopted from the Rigveda. There are four surviving recensions of the Krishna Yajurveda- Taittiriya Samhita, Maitrayani Samhita, Katha Samhita and Kapishthala Samhita. Atharvaveda Attharveda dates back to 1000-800 BCE. The Atharvaveda constitutes the daily procedures or codes of conduct of life and its various chores. It primarily has 730 hymns / suktas, 6000 mantras, and 20 books. Significance of Sattvic diet Food, not all nourishes our body, but it impacts our minds and consciousnesses. Yogis and sages of ancient India believed that food is the creator of the life force that sustains our body and keeps us in good health. It is essential to choose the right kind of food for well-being and a healthy lifestyle. Yogis have classified food into three types based on the effects they have on our body- Sattva, tamas, and rajas. Hence they have developed three different food habits pertaining to these emotions, namely, Sattvic, Rajasic, and Tamasic. Today we will be talking about the Saatvik diet. Satvik Food The word ‘Saatvik’ has been derived from the Sanskrit word “Sattva”. In Yogic literature, Sattva means something that is clean, pure and ethically energetic. A Saatvik diet is intended to incorporate food items that adhere to their true meaning. It also pertains to ideal eating habits such as eating in small portions (avoiding overeating). All these together are said to maintain the equilibrium of a healthy mind and body. Ayurveda advocates that a person must eat according to his/her dosha. Essentially the human body is said to be made up of three doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Vata dosha is concerned with energy that controls bodily functions associated with motion like blood circulation, eye blinking, breathing etc. Pitta dosha is the energy that regulates the metabolism of the body, which includes nutrition, digestion, body temperature etc. Kapha dosha pertains to maintaining growth in the body. It helps in maintaining the immune system by providing water and moisture to all body parts. Hence, Ayurveda envisages eating as per these doshas, so as to avoid any imbalances in the body and mind. A Saatvik diet is a regime that is purely directed towards a vegetarian diet. It may include seasonal fresh fruits, ample fresh vegetables, whole grain pulses, sprouts, dried nuts, seeds, honey, fresh herbs, milk, and dairy products, which are cruelty-free. However, onion and garlic are precluded from this diet. There exists a pervasive misconception that the Saatvik diet is all about raw or uncooked food, which is completely mistaken. It consists of both raw and cooked food. The ulterior idea of the Saatvik diet is to incorporate foods and eating habits that are “pure, essential, natural, vital, energy-containing, clean, conscious, true, honest, wise”. Ayurvedic science believes that food of this dietary regime contains the quality of Sattva, which represents the quality of goodness, positivity, truth, and virtuousness guided towards Dharma or Gyaan (knowledge). Saatvik diet is known to promote Ahimsa, the practise of non-violence or not causing harm to other living things. This is the cardinal reason why Yogis and saints follow a Saatvik diet. In this dietary system, fresh nuts and seeds, which are not overly roasted, can also be consumed. All fruits are considered to be a crucial component of a Saatvik diet. Most mild vegetables are considered Saatvik. The regime of this dietary system embodies the virtues of non-violence or Ahimsa as it comprises vegetarian proteins, derived without harming nature or any of its living organisms. Saatvik diet has a plethora of flavours –sweet, savoury, bitter, astringent, etc., as opposed to the general notion that it is bland and tasteless. Impact of Sattvic diet on the body: Yogic diet or Sattvic diet has a plethora of benefits, helping the body, mind, and soul in innumerable ways. A few of them are as follows. Why does science need spirituality to make sense? Life is precious. With several pursuits and people involved, life is the culmination of the past, present, and future, which redefines the existence of humanity. The most pertinent characteristic of life is to have a purpose. Meaningless life can significantly contribute to causing anxiety, depression, and phobias, ultimately turning in major psychological ailments such as “existential anxiety”. This is when the concept of spirituality becomes most relevant. Spirituality is often misunderstood, especially by the younger. It is usually a fat, smiling Buddha sitting with crossed legs or an old sage (rishi) sitting and meditating at the top of a hill. While these images may be the representation of a particular section of people who have associated themselves with this profound practice of wellness, it does not depict the entire story. Spirituality is for everyone. It is a pathway to gaining perspective of life. It recognizes the fact that human life is much more than what they do every day or plan to do in the future. It defies social dependency on material things and helps us to comprehend the greater purpose of life. Spirituality invokes a higher form of cognition and intelligence that transcends the reality of time, which runs the universe. It advocates a more profound sense of human thirst for peace, truth, and tranquillity. An interesting fact about spirituality is that it is not dependent on religion. One can be spiritual and yet not religious. Spirituality has a much broader spectrum, with room for many perspectives and schools of thought. It can be seen as an endeavor to achieve a sense of connection to something bigger than ourselves, coupled with the search for true meaning. It is a universal human experience –something that touches us all at some level. Loopholes of science The world has come a long way in terms of scientific innovations and transformations. It has moved from molecules to atoms to the sub-atomic particles. Yet it has failed to explain the composition of the fundamental forces of nature and the life-giving substances that prevail in various dimensions across the universe. It may not be wrong to say that science is oblivious to the space beyond the physical world. Many driving forces of nature are still arcane and obfuscated for science to describe them through its theories. Hence there arises a need to differentiate between the mind and matter. For example, the carbon atom makes charcoal; the same carbon atom makes a human being. This remains inexplicable by science, and it is unable to differentiate between living and non-living phenomenon. The innominate space of life energies poses a severe existential question about the credibility of science and its various pursuits. The human mind is still a mystery, the composition of the soul is unknown, and many such undiscovered realities are glaring before the scientific world, to be recognized or explained. It will be wrong to conclude that there were no scientific endeavors to answer these questions, but all have ended in smoke. Hence there has been an inadvertent need to follow a different path to aid the scientific findings and propositions. The connection between Science and Spirituality There has been a pervasive perception that science and spirituality are opposite fields. But in reality, they both are two sides of the same coin. The actual aim of science is to unleash the deepest mysteries of the spiritual dimension, and the goal of spirituality is the search for the reason behind scientific reasoning. This paradigm tends to be appealing to both practitioners of science and spirituality. There is not much difference between the physical scientists who have chosen science as their field of study and spiritual scientists who entail their lives around spiritual research. Both paths lead to the same destinations. They are in a quest of the unknown, greater power or energy that created everything and thereby use these discoveries to improve human lives. It may sound profound that the physical scientists are trying to prove God to themselves through the outer eyes and ears, whereas, spiritual scientists are in the same expedition but through their inner eyes and ears. They are sailing on the same ship, just with different sailors.In science, a hypothesis is tested, and observations are made depending on the same. Science is trying to unravel the mystery of how creation came into existence and how human beings came into being. It is a quest for discovering the series of events that occurred at the advent of creation. Hence the scientific tool can be used to prove the validity of spiritual existence. History has witnessed several great scientists who have admitted to the fact that there was a divine power behind the inspiration of their discoveries of inventions. Albert Einstein once said, “I assert that the cosmic religious experiences are the strongest and the noblest driving force behind scientific research“. Going hand in hand? If perceived from a non-judgemental prism of thought, science and spirituality make a great pair. They have the same destination; their paths are different. People interested in science tend to spend hours in silence for self-introspection, which ultimately leads to inspirations and answers which they are seeking. Similarly, spiritual minds can apply the scientific law of testing hypotheses in their own body and soul to find their desired results. Science can uncover the most profound spiritual truths and vice-versa. The Importance of Meditation as a tool for emotional control Introduction It is said that if you don’t manage your emotions, then your emotions will manage you. Emotions are the language of our soul. Emotions are a way to express yourself. Whether one is angry, happy, or sad, the expression says it all. There are so many emotions going on within yourself. It sometimes becomes challenging to keep control of those emotions, and we end up feeling anxious and helpless. Apart from being physically fit, powerful or intelligent, it is also important that the person is emotionally intelligent. Emotional intelligence refers to recognizing your emotions and being sensitive to the emotions of others around you and thinking of ways to manage and control your emotions effectively. It becomes essential to be self-aware of your emotions and understand how you can manage the bouts of emotions running inside you. Being self-aware can help us to manage and control our emotions to quite an extent. It will help in balancing our state of mind also. Now for some of you, meditation might be a hell of a task. You would question how and from where to start, or you don’t have enough time for it. All these things might surround your mind. A simple 5-minute meditation is an answer to all your questions. You can do this while sitting in your bed just after waking up in the morning. Sitting straight and uprooted with your eyes closed, relaxing your face and body, and listening to the sounds that come from your surroundings. Try to recognise those sounds and then slowly move your attention to your breath. Just listen and feel the inhalation and exhalation of your breath. Meanwhile, there might be some thoughts running through your mind. Let them run and just try to bring yourself back to listening to your breath. The more you return towards your breath, the more you will be strengthened to control your emotions. Focusing on your breath and trying to calm and restore your mind is the key. This way, you will react less and respond more. This is a beneficial meditation technique to control your reactions and become more relaxed and mindful. This is what I told my father when I was making the decision of which subject to choose after class 10th. He insisted on me taking up mathematics as a subject because it would help me a lot in the future. But I thought the other way round and was sure that mathematics would not help me much later in life. It was then when my father introduced me to the history of mathematics. He told me how, since ancient times, mathematics has played a major role and is the founding stone for other subjects and fields. A Note on the the Inception Talking of the Ancient period, the Vedas are the oldest literary record of Indo- Aryan civilization. They are the original scriptures of Hindu teachings containing information regarding all the spheres of life. The word Veda is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Vid’ which means to know. Veda is, therefore, the storehouse of knowledge. As per Dr Krishna Lal, supreme knowledge is present in Vedas. It also contains information and history of how Vedic mathematics was found and useful in all fields. It is the ancient system of calculation that was revived by Sri Bharati Krishna Tirthaji Maharaj between the years 1911 and 1918. According to him, Vedic mathematics is based on sixteen formulas or sutras. It is said that any kind of calculation can be solved mentally with the help of these sutras. Vedic mathematics has a very unique and striking theory and method quite distinct from modern mathematics. It explains certain tricks and shortcuts to solve various problems like dividing, multiplying, and factoring big numbers in a faster way. The Applications of Vedic Mathematics Vedic mathematics has been used in the context of spirituality earlier. Mathematics was used to explore those principles which were needed for the advancement of the realization of God. But after realizing the power of principles of mathematics, the later civilizations further researched and explored them to know more about nature. The world’s oldest civilization, the Indus Valley civilization had developed its own unique system of mathematics. The geometrical and mathematical investigations are contained in the Vedic sutra. The basis of all the Indian mathematical concepts is geometry. The Indus Valley has evidence of the geometrical drawing instruments. The Vedic mathematicians had developed the decimal system of tens, hundreds and thousands. This has made the calculations much easier. The number 0 or shunaya was first introduced by the Indian mathematician. It is one of the most important developments in the history of mathematics. The concept of Indian numerals which were evolved from Brahmi numerals has been used in Arabia and other countries. The medieval mathematicians made several discoveries like the system of finding cube roots and square roots, solving quadratic equations and understanding the import of positive and negative quantities. The contribution of Mahavir where he found out the treatment of fractions and how one fraction can be divided by another was remarkable and was not known to Europe till the 16th century. The use of symbols and letters of the alphabets to denote unknowns and equations also became popular in India first. They had given birth to the science of algebra. The Indian mathematician Bhaskaracharya found out solutions to some complex problems that were not known by Europe until the 17 and 18th centuries. The Indian system of mathematics has served as a base for most of the discoveries and inventions in Europe. Aryabhata was the first Indian mathematician to claim that earth revolves around the sun way before Copernicus. The foundation stone of science is mathematics. With mathematical advancement, one has to advance scientifically also. The Vedic system of mathematics and its concepts helped the people apply it in the real world. The mathematics of that time was connected with the literature, which is not so commonly seen with modern mathematics. The 16 sutras given by Sri Bharati Krishna Tirthaji Maharaj were conveyed through poetry that was written in Sanskrit so that it can be easily understood by people.
